Synopsis

When the TARDIS is infiltrated by a mysterious force, the Doctor and Sarah Jane are drawn off course and arrive in England at the turn of the 20th Century. Dark forces from aeons ago are beginning to stir, and the whole future of life on Earth is at stake. Sutekh, last of the Osirians, is breaking free from his ancient prison, and no power in the universe can stand in his way ...

Background

When the readers of Doctor Who Magazine were asked to vote for the story they would most like to see released on DVD, their overwhelming verdict was Pyramids of Mars.

It's not hard to understand why this is such a highly rated story. Many say that Doctor Who came of age under producer Philip Hiuncliffe, and over his three years at the helm, the series steadily developed a greater sense of drama, combined with a touch of horror and black humour. Not for the first time Hincliffe demonstrated his mastery of the formula with Pyramids of Mars.

Doctor Who's strong portrayal of the past, coupled with the gothic setting of an English mansion at the turn of the twentieth century, we well as the imagery of ancient Egypt - particularly the robot mummies - makes for compulsive viewing. Add to this one of Tom Baker's most intense performances, and Gabriel Woolfe providing villan in Sutekh, and Pyramids of Mars stands the test of time.

BBC Radio Enterprises Ltd and BBC Enterprises Ltd, predecessors of BBC Worldwide / BBC Worldwide Ltd., the BBC's commercial arm. Formed 1968 and 1979 respectively, they were a subsidiary wholly owned by the BBC and merged into BBC Worldwide in 1995. In that time, there were companies set up within or structured brands as part of the company to deal with separate parts of the business, e.g. BBC Records for recorded audio. Sometimes written as BBC Enterprise Ltd.
